ROCK ISLAND – Augustana senior middle linebacker Erik Westerberg, a York graduate, has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2013 Gagliardi Trophy, the top individual honor awarded in NCAA Division III football.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 18, two days prior to the NCAA Division III Championship game in Salem, Va.

Westerberg, already a two-time Capital One Academic All-American and a National Football Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship winner, was the Vikings' leading tackler for the third straight year in 2013. He recorded 78 total tackles, 61 solo stops and 10.5 tackles for loss – all team bests. He ranked 18th in the nation with an average of 6.8 solo tackles per game. He was third in the conference with an average of 8.5 total tackles in six league games and earned second team All-CCIW recognition.

As a junior, Westerberg was the CCIW’s Defensive Player of the Year and a third team All-America pick by D3football.com. He was a second team all-region selection by D3football.com as a sophomore. Westerberg was a first team All-CCIW pick as both a sophomore and junior.

Last year's Gagliardi Trophy winner had an Elmhurst connection. Downers Grove South graduate Scottie Williams won the award as a senior running back for Elmhurst College.
