LOMBARD – Montini is now one win away from its first ever undefeated season.

The Broncos beat Sycamore 42-20 in a Class 5A state semifinal Saturday afternoon in Lombard.

The win improved Montini’s record to 13-0. They will face Sacred Heart-Griffin in the 5A final at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb next Saturday at 10 a.m.

“That was our No. 1 goal going into the season,” Montini senior wide receiver Tyler Tumpane said of going undefeated. “We’re one game away so we really want to finish this off.”

Montini led throughout against Sycamore. The Broncos scored on their first drive when Tumpane caught a 7-yard pass from quarterback Alex Wills. Wills scored on Montini’s next drive with a 7-yard run.

Sycamore (12-1) got on the board in the second quarter when Tumpane fumbled and Ben Niemann picked it up in the end zone.

Second quarter Montini touchdowns from Stephen Dennis (6-yard catch) and Nile Sykes (2-yard run) helped the Broncos take a 28-14 lead into halftime.

Matt Brachmann and Wills added second half scores to put the game away.

“We’ve had a great season,” Andriano said. “We’ve done the right things and it’s time to hopefully get it done again.”
