ELMHURST – The ramp from southbound Interstate 294 to westbound I-290 in Elmhurst will be closed early Thursday morning, according to an Illinois Tollway news release.
The ramp is scheduled to close from midnight to 5 a.m. Nov. 21 while crews repair traffic sensors on the ramp.
A detour will reroute traffic south on I-294 and then east on I-290. There drivers will be directed to exit at Mannheim Road north and take that westbound I-290 entrance ramp.
The Illinois Tollway scheduled the closure during the overnight hours to minimize the impact to commuter traffic because a full closure is necessary. The bridge is not wide enough to accommodate a work zone and maintain traffic, according to the release.
Drivers are reminded to follow construction zone speed limits at all times and to watch for changing traffic patterns. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise drivers of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.
