Thousands were without power Sunday evening in the wake of the storms that hit the west suburbs earlier in the day.

After severe thunderstorms tore through the west suburbs mid-day Sunday, power is in the process of returning to the thousands who lost electricity during the weather event, according to ComEd's website.

A tornado watch and a wind warning were issued earlier in the day by the National Weather Service. Gusts of wind on Sunday in the region were tracked traveling as high as 46 mph.

Hundreds lost power in several communities throughout the west suburbs, the website said. More than 1,000 residents in the Berwyn, Riverside and Winfield areas were without electricity as of early Sunday evening, according to the website.

By mid-evening Sunday, the outages had begun to dwindle as power was restored, the website said.
