Benet's Kelly O'Malley returns the ball during Friday's Class 4A semifinal match against Crystal Lake South. The Redwings fell to Mother McAuley in the state title match Saturday night.

NORMAL – In its quest for a third consecutive state title, Benet's girls volleyball team fell just short in a 25-22, 25-19 loss to Mother McAuley in Saturday's Class 4A championship match at Redbird Arena.

The Redwings finished the season with a 36-6 record. Mother McAuley finished 40-2 and did not lose to a team from Illinois all season. In fact, the Mighty Macs were pushed to three games in a match just four times this season.

Dana Griffin and Rachael Fara had six kills apiece to lead the Redwings, and Whitney Battoe added five kills. Stephanie Sinnappan dished out 20 assists and Caroline Wolf and Kelly O'Malley led the defensive effort with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
