LA GRANGE PARK – A 51-year-old Maywood man charged with murdering his 81-year-old aunt in 2009 was found guilty Friday of first-degree murder.

David Brown, 51, was convicted on 13 charges, including six counts of first-degree murder, for the death of his aunt, Gertrude Franklin, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office announced Friday. The ruling was made by Cook County Court Fourth District Judge Noreen Love.

Franklin died about two weeks after she was found unconscious on the floor of her home in the 1000 block of Barnsdale Road on Oct. 29, 2009.

Earlier that day, Brown was arrested after crashing Franklin’s car into a tree while trying to flee from police following a traffic stop for disobeying a traffic signal. An officer responding to the crash noticed the vehicle from a past incident, prompting police to check on Franklin.

Police found Franklin unconscious on the floor of her home with injuries to her head and face. On Nov. 12, 2009, she died from injuries suffered during the attack.

Brown was on parole at the time of his arrest in 2009 and has been in custody since.

His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 12.
