Letter: LWV supports president's environmental plan

Published: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 3:34 p.m. CDT

To the Editor:

President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have proposed a first-ever federal carbon pollution standard for every new plant built in America.

As co-presidents of the League of Women Voters of Downers Grove/Woodridge/Lisle, we are proud to support the president’s plan to cut carbon pollution and ensure a cleaner, healthier future for everyone.

Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge of our lifetime – it comes at a high cost to all of us, contributing to more frequent storms and deadly weather that result in billions of dollars of recovery costs for local communities every year.

Carbon pollution, the leading cause of climate change, also has deadly effects on the health of our children, seniors and our environment. Power plants are the largest emitters of life-threatening carbon pollution in our country. Reducing the amount of carbon pollution from these plants is a life-saving measure that will help protect our children, our nation and the world.

Please join us in supporting this new standard by submitting a written comment to the EPA. Email may be sent to or by regular mail to Air and Radiation Docket and Information Center, Environmental Protection Agency, Mail Code: 2822T, 1200 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC, 20460. Comments must reference Docket ID No.EPA-HQ-OAR-2013-0495.
