DOWNERS GROVE – Dozens of veterans visited Downers Grove North and South high schools last week ahead of the Veterans Day holiday.
On Nov. 5, South High welcomed a panel of veterans to speak to students about their experiences.
On Nov. 6, North High was host to more than 80 area veterans, including those who served in World War II, Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam and other recent conflicts. Veterans participated in an assembly and visited individual classrooms to share their experiences with students.
Among those who attended were Congressman Peter Roskam, Lt. Col. Dan Whisnant, who served in Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and Lt. Melissa Stockwell, the first American woman to lose a limb in active combat and first Iraqi War veteran to qualify for the Paralympics in swimming.
