Montini junior wide receiver Leon Thornton had a huge day for the Broncos against rival Marian Central on Saturday. He led the team in receptions (nine), yards (130) and touchdowns (three) to help Montini advance to the Class 5A quarterfinals with a 40-7 win. In the quarterfinal, Thornton and the Broncos will another familiar team in Joliet Catholic. This will be the fourth playoff meeting in the past five years between the Broncos and Hilltoppers. Thornton, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about his big game, the team’s big win and the upcoming Joliet Catholic game.
What does it mean to beat Marian again?
It’s just a big win. We’ve been thinking about it all last week. We just wanted to make it a bigger difference than last time.
Did you expect to win by that much?
We came into the game thinking it was going to be close and down to the wire, but we dominated.
What was working for you against Marian?
I was just getting open. No special play calls. I just did my part.
What do you think of the Montini-Joliet Catholic rivalry?
Montini-JCA is probably bigger than Montini-Marian because JCA is highly ranked and touted and there’s a lot of history there.
