Montini football moves from one rival to another

WOODSTOCK – From one rivalry game to another.

Montini faced host Marian Catholic in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs on Saturday and won 40-7. That victory sets up this weekend’s game against Joliet Catholic in the quarterfinals. The Broncos and Hilltoppers have met in the playoffs the last four years, including the 2011 championship game and last year’s state semifinal.

Montini and Marian played a close contest during the regular season, but there was little doubt about Saturday’s outcome.

One interesting note? Montini netted just two rushing yards, but it clearly didn’t have any affect on the outcome.

Montini 40, Marian Catholic 7

Passing: Alex Wills 23-for-42, 304 yards, 5 TDs

Records: No. 1 Montini 11-0; No. 4 Joliet Catholic 10-1
Outlook: One rival down, another ahead. After knocking Marian Central out of the playoffs for the fifth year in a row, the Broncos take on a team they have eliminated three of the past four years: Joliet Catholic. Last year the Broncos won in a semifinal 40-37 and Montini beat the Hilltoppers in state finals in 2009 and 2011.
