Wood Dale man charged with robbing Oak Brook bank

OAK BROOK – A Wood Dale man suspected of robbing a Fifth Third Bank in Oak Brook Oct. 29 was located and arrested in downtown Chicago earlier this week, according to a news release from the Chicago FBI.

Andrew J. Johnston, 23, was taken into custody without incident Monday morning. Johnston was charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago on Nov. 1 with one count of bank robbery, a felony offense, in connection with the October robbery of the Fifth Third Bank branch located at 1603 West 16th St. in Oak Brook.

According to the complaint, an individual, later identified as Johnston, entered the bank, demanded $5,000 in large bills from a bank teller, and after receiving cash from the teller, left the bank on foot headed toward a nearby residential area.

Eyewitness accounts and additional investigation led to the identification of Johnston as the alleged robber and the filing of the complaint that was the basis of the arrest.

Johnston appeared before a United States Magistrate Judge on Monday, at which time he was formally charged and ordered held pending his next court appearance. If convicted, Johnston faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison, according to the release.
