D-33, West Chicago police partner to increase school safety

WEST CHICAGO – West Chicago Elementary School District 33 has partnered with the West Chicago Police Department to enhance school safety and security through increased police presence at schools, according to a District 33 news release.

Once a week, two West Chicago police officers will eat lunch with District 33 students. Officers also have been invited to sit in the schools’ parking lots while completing paperwork.

The district’s school resource officer, who is based at Leman Middle School, will regularly visit District 33’s preschools and elementary schools.

“District 33 believes it is important for our students, staff and parents to have positive relationships with police officers,” the release said. “The increased presence of the West Chicago police allows for this positive relationship with police officers to be developed.”

These initiatives for the 2013-14 school year come after the district started a fingerprint criminal background check last year for all volunteers who would be alone with and responsible for students during the school day at field trips or outdoor education trips.
