Prep roundup: Knights volleyball advances to sectional final
IC Catholic’s girls volleyball team won a Class 2A regional on Oct. 31 by defeating Westmont 25-19, 25-21. Kimmy Martino had 24 assists, setting up hitters Rory Manion (seven kills, 10 digs) and Delaney D’Amore (nine kills, 11 digs).
In the sectional semifinal at South Beloit on Tuesday, IC found a way to win a tight match. The Knights beat Dakota 25-18, 17-25, 26-24. IC’s big three all put up big stats in the victory: D’Amore had 16 kills and 21 digs, Manion had 20 kills and 10 digs and Martino had 38 assists.
IC plays Oregon in the sectional final Thursday.
The Dukes’ season came to an end with a heartbreaking loss to St. Charles East in a regional final on Oct. 31. The Saints won 28-26, 19-25, 25-23. The Dukes led 23-21 in the decisive game before losing. York finished the season 23-12.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
The Dukes were forced to settle for second at the Lake Park sectional on Saturday, losing to New Trier 79-95. Nathan Mroz (14:52) won the race, but the Trevians placed three runners in the top-20 and all five scoring runners in the top-30. York’s Kyle Mattes was 10th. Alex Bashqawi (27th), Max Denning (28th) and Jon May (29th) rounded out York’s scoring runners.
The Trojans missed out on state by seven points after taking sixth at the Class 1A Lisle sectional. Michael Larkin (18th) and Noah Pavlakos (36th) led Timothy.
The Knights took 16th at the Lisle sectional. Philip Roberto led IC with a 25th place finish.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
The Dukes took eighth at the Lake Park sectional with Dayle Mueller (38th) and Hannah Wahlgren (39th) leading the way.
The Trojans missed state as a team by one spot after taking sixth at the Class 1A Lisle sectional, but sophomore Hannah Bosman did qualify individually.
Bosman was seventh overall, which booked her a trip to Peoria.
Rachel Hill finished 60th and Mikko Eguia was 63rd at the Lisle sectional on Saturday.
The Dukes took fourth at the West Suburban Silver meet at Lyons Township last weekend. Second-place finishers for York were Jessica Woolfe (50-yard freestyle) and Paula Nolte (100 breaststroke).
Hannah Nolte was third in the 200 individual medley.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Perri Brinkmeier, Maggie Schlecht, Nolte and Woolfe finished third.
