York senior cross country runner Nathan Mroz crossed the finish line in 14:52 at the Lake Park sectional in Roselle on Saturday to win the race. The Dukes were second in the team standings to New Trier, which was a disappointment for the prestigious program. Mroz will be making his fourth trip, second time as a runner, to Peoria’s Detweiller Park for state this weekend. Mroz, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the sectional race and the upcoming state meet.
What did it mean to you to win the sectional?
Our main focus was to make it as a team. I think that’s the most important thing. It doesn’t matter where I finished as long as we made it as a team. It’s a nice bonus to get the win.
How do you think the team did?
It was not a good race for us. I couldn’t tell you what the reason was. I think we kind of got a bad start and from then on it set the tone for the race and it wasn’t really good.
What have your state experiences been like?
I would compare it to nothing else. It’s amazing. When you walk off that bus it’s the coolest thing. You got 200 fans, you got the band. It’s a great atmosphere. It’s such a great thing to be a part of.
Do you like the course at Detweiller Park?
I think since the meet has been there for so long you base everything off of that. Personally, I like the course. It’s nice and flat and it makes for a fast race.
