LOMBARD – The Friends of the Great Western Trails will host a special trail cleanup and restoration along the Illinois Prairie Path and the Great Western Trail from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The focus of the clean-up will be the removal of buckthorn, as well as trash, from the trail pathways.
Autumn is the best time to identify buckthorn because it retains its green leaves and black berries longer than other trees, officials said. The invasive species steals nutrients from native plants and threatens wildlife habitats.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own loppers, handsaws, gloves and safety glasses, however, some gear will be available. All brush will be brought to the nearest cross street for village crews to collect.
Please contact Dave Gorman, assistant director of public works, at 630-620-5765 or email@example.com to sign up for a trail section.
