LT offense stalls in second half of playoff loss

CHICAGO – Lyons Township led Simeon at halftime, but couldn’t find the offense to put the game away in the second half.

The Lions’ season came to a close with a 20-16 loss to Simeon at Gately Stadium in Chicago on Saturday in a Class 8A first round playoff game.

Simeon (7-3) scored first, but the Lions (5-5) built a 14-6 lead on a pair of touchdowns from Leonard Ross. Ross ran in scores from 13 and three yards out in the second quarter. The junior running back finished with 74 yards on 17 carries.

The Wolverines scored again just before halftime, but failed the tying two-point conversion. LT led 14-12 at halftime.

Simeon took the lead for good with 9:42 left in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run.

“I thought offensively we did a good job moving the ball and we just couldn’t get anything going in the second half,” LT coach Kurt Weinberg said.

On the ensuing drive LT converted three third downs and got into a first-and-goal situation. However, they were unable to score and turned the ball over on downs with 3:26 left in the game.

LT’s defense held Simeon to give the offense another chance. The Wolverines took a safety on the punt. The Lions got back within Simeon territory, but couldn’t convert a fourth-and-three on the 33-yard line.

It’s is LT’s first defeat in the first round of the playoffs since 2009.
