Veterans to eat free again at Papa Passero’s on Veterans Day

WESTMONT – For the past 25 years, a family owned Westmont restaurant has been honoring war veterans with free lunches every Veterans Day.

Papa Passero’s, 6326 S. Cass Ave., will provide a free lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Monday for all veterans.

Laura Trilla, owner of Papa Passero’s, said her father, who served in the Navy in World War II, started the tradition.

“He just always felt that the veterans needed to be thanked and that was his way of saying ‘thank you’ for all they’ve done for this country,” Trilla said.

Papa Passero’s offers the free lunch on Memorial Day as well.

Trilla said her father passed away in 2010, but it’s a tradition the restaurant will carry on. Veterans of all ages take advantage each year, she said.

“They come in to be together as one and share their stories and pictures,” Trilla said. “It’s truly touching.

“They fought for us and they [still] fight for our freedom. They’re the ones who are in harm’s way while we’re home and free.”
