A number of area boys soccer team had great success this year. Morton won conference and a sectional title. Lyons Township won a regional and beat rival Hinsdale Central in a sectional semifinal. St. Joseph won a regional title for the sixth year in a row. Those teams are all well represented on the 2013 Suburban Life all-area boys soccer team.
Luis Alvarado
School: Morton
Year: Senior
Impact: The Mustangs' defense is among the best in the state and Alvarado was a key reason why. Shifting between right back and left back, Alvarado brought toughness and experience to the Morton back line. Alvarado, a four-year varsity player, was an honorable mention all-sectional pick.
Santiago Beltran
School: Riverside Brookfield
Year: Senior
Impact: Beltran was the top playmaker for the Bulldogs. The senior captain played an attacking role in midfield and was a dynamic player on the ball. He battled injuries this season, but was still a key player in his third year on varsity.
Ian Chacon (MVP story)
School: Morton
Year: Junior
Impact: Morton's ability to possess the ball and its quality defense didn't always make Chacon work hard, but the junior goalkeeper typically came up with the big saves when required. The third year varsity player is a big reason why the Morton defense has over 20 shutouts this season.
Alonso Fregoso
School: Morton
Year: Senior
Impact: Fregoso moved from central defender to forward in the middle of the season and used his size to shield defenders and hold up the ball for the Mustangs. Fregoso is never shy to make a fancy move on the ball. He had a goal and an assist in the regional final victory and assisted the only goal in the sectional final.
Anthony Gulli
School: St. Joseph
Year: Junior
Impact: The midfielder was on Benet's varsity team as a freshman, but has been a big addition to the St. Joseph program since transferring. He emerged as a top player for the Chargers this season, earning all-state honors and helping St. Joseph win a regional title.
Harry Hilling
School: Lyons Township
Year: Junior
Impact: Hilling was a major contributor on a team filled with senior starters. He set the tone for the offense with his play in central midfield and was the team's top creator. Hilling scored twice in the regional final win against Downers Grove South.
Frankie Kocimski
School: Lyons Township
Year: Senior
Impact: Kocimski's long and flat throws added an extra dynamic to the LT attack, but he was so much more than a big arm. The tall, fast and athletic forward wasn't afraid to run at defenders and cause havoc on opposing defenses. Kocimski was also a team captain and an all-sectional selection each of the past two years.
Matt Murphy
School: Lyons Township
Year: Senior
Impact: Murphy was LT's leading scorer last year despite largely coming off the bench and continued to be a key threat in the Lions' attack this season. The senior was an all-state pick as a forward, standing out among the many talented attacking options on the team.
Fabian Robles
School: St. Joseph
Year: Senior
Impact: The Chargers' captain led the team to a 16-4-3 record this season. He helped solidify the back line as a central defender in his third year on varsity. He was an honorable mention all-sectional pick.
Tom Smith
School: Fenwick
Year: Senior
Impact: Smith was a key part of a defense that gave up more than one goal just five times this season. The all-state defender was a part of the Friars' sectional winning squad last year and helped the Friars post a 4-1 record in Chicago Catholic League play this year.
Chris Tovar
School: Nazareth
Year: Senior
Impact: Tovar has been a big part of Nazareth's first ever sectional title as the team's leading goal scorer. The senior forward was named East Suburban Catholic all-conference for the second straight year and was an all-sectional selection this season.
