Lombard Veterans' Day Ceremony moves to new location

Published: Friday, Nov. 1, 2013 8:59 a.m. CDT

LOMBARD – The village of Lombard will be holding its annual Veterans’ Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at a new location – the Sunken Garden at Lombard Common Park, located near Grace and Maple streets.

The annual event was previously held in Volunteer Plaza located at St. Charles Road and Main Stre, but the Veterans Day planning committee chose the new location this year to account for loud noise caused by nearby intersection and to make more room for event attendees.

The annual ceremony, also known as Armistice Day, is a day to remember and honor more than 24 million military soldiers in the United States. Lombard’s Village President Keith Giagnorio will open the ceremony and Rev. Thomas Botheroyd of Sacred Heart Church will give the invocation.

Illinois VFW District 19 Commander Gerold “Gerry” Abraham will give the keynote address. Abraham will speak about the tradition of serving our country in the military.

Following the ceremony, the Lombard Historical Commission in conjunction with the VFW Lilac Post 5815 will be hosting a gravestone dedication at Babcock’s Grove Cemetery, 460 S. Main St. All are encouraged to attend.
