LT’s Chatt takes third at state tennis, Naz’s Petrovic top-8
BUFFALO GROVE – Alex Chatt’s high school tennis career ended without the state title she was striving for, but Chatt did add another all-state finish.
The Lyons Township senior entered the state tournament as the top overall seed, but settled for third place at last weekend’s tourney.
Chatt was a four-time state qualifier, though she didn’t get to participate in state her freshman year due to an injury. As a sophomore she was the runner-up and each of the last two years she took third.
The Northwestern recruit cruised to the semifinals with five straight-set victories in a row. Hinsdale Central’s Isabella Lorenzini beat her 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the semis. Chatt rebounded by dominating New Trier’s Carol Finke 6-0, 6-1 for third place.
The doubles team of Jillian Kaehler and Maggie Schwartz went 3-2 with two wins in the main draw. Samantha Sherman and Meghan Hickey teamed up and went 2-2 with two main-draw victories.
As a team, LT scored 22 points and took sixth.
Nazareth’s Petrovic makes quarters
Lexie Petrovic finished in the top eight at state. The senior won four consecutive matches in the main draw and made the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champ Tiffany Chen of Naperville Central.
Petrovic won one more match in the consolation draw to place in the top eight before being forced to withdraw in the next match due to an injury. She had won the first set before the injury.
Fenwick cracks top-20 as team
Laura Gutierrez went 4-2 with two wins in the main singles draw wins and the doubles team of Dana Balk and Ana Sprajcer went 3-2 to give Fenwick 10 points. That was enough for the Friars to tie for 18th in the overall standings.
