Prep roundup: Nazareth, St. Joseph soccer nab regional titles
Nazareth’s boys soccer team won a regional title by defeating Hancock 2-1 on Saturday at Cristo Rey Jesuit. Naz beat Lindblom 3-1 in the regional semifinal on Oct. 23. The No. 6 seed Roadrunners take on No. 7 Little Village in a Class 2A sectional semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Brookfield.
Riverside Brookfield/St. Joseph
Top sectional seed St. Joseph claimed its sixth straight regional crown with a 4-0 win over No. 9 seed Riverside Brookfield in the St. Laurence regional final on Saturday. Eduardo Gutierrez scored twice and Jacob Hansen and Fabian Robles each found the net once. The Chargers will take on No. 4 Kennedy in a sectional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Brookfield.
RB, which beat St. Laurence 3-2 in the semifinal on goals from Stephen Lechuga, James Kaczmarczyk and Santiago Beltran, finished the season with a 7-11-3 record.
The Friars were unable to recreate the magic of last year’s sectional title run. The season came to an end in a 4-0 regional final loss to top sectional seed Hinsdale Central. Fenwick finished with a 7-8-4 record.
The Lions closed the regular season with a 4-1 record at the Lyons Township Invitational over the weekend. LT beat Young, Hinsdale South and Edwardsville in two games on Friday. On Saturday they beat Marian Central 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, but lost to champion Lake Zurich 20-25, 18-25.
The Bulldogs finished the regular season 19-14 after dropping all four matches at the Kaneland Varsity Tournament on Saturday. RB lost to Geneva, Metea Valley, Normal West and the hosts.
The Friars went 1-4 at the Lyons Township Invitational to close out the regular season. Fenwick lost to York, Normal, Glenbrook North and Hinsdale South and defeated Hinsdale Central 20-25, 25-21, 25-22.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
The Lions were third at their own regional on Saturday. Seniors James Ryan (seventh), Dan Lupano (eighth) and Kevin Kilrea (12th) led LT. The Lions advanced to Saturday’s Hinsdale Central sectional
Mateo Hernandez led the Mustangs to a fourth place finish at the Lyons Township regional on Saturday, which was good enough to advance to Saturday’s Hinsdale Central sectional race. Hernandez crossed the finish line in fifth with a time of 15:00. All seven Morton runners placed in the top-30.
The Bulldogs dominated their own Class 2A regional on Saturday. All seven RB runners placed in the top-20 and four were in the top-10. Dan Curtin led the way with a second place finish. Kevin Faje (fourth), Matt Sagan (fifth), Kyle Georgopolous (sixth) and Wayne Morrelly (12th) also contributed to RB’s winning team score. The Bulldogs will run as a team at Saturday’s Wheaton Academy sectional.
Naz took second to host Riverside Brookfield in a Class 2A regional on Saturday. Johnny Bareis was Nazareth’s top runner, taking 10th.
The Friars advanced to a sectional by taking fourth place as host of a Class 3A regional at Schiller Woods. Salvatore Flight was fifth with a time of 15:12. Fenwick’s next race is Saturday’s Lake Park sectional.
James Graham advanced out of the Lyons Township regional on Saturday. Graham was 45th with a time of 17:50. The Panthers were eighth in the team standings.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Lexy Rudofski crossed the finish line in second at the Lyons Township regional. Katie Hamor was eighth and Hannah Dutler was 10th. LT was third and advanced to Saturday’s Hinsdale Central sectional race.
The Mustangs advanced to Saturday’s Hinsdale Central sectional race with a fifth place finish at the Lyons Township regional. Jalissa Stokes was Morton’s fastest runner, taking 25th.
Mailin Struck won the regional race with a time of 17:11. RB was second in the team standings, two points behind Nazareth. Sarah Melone was second overall in 19:07. Clare Bollnow (sixth) and Meaghan Dorsey (ninth) also finished in the top-10. All seven RB runners placed inside the top-15 as the Bulldogs advanced to Saturday’s Wheaton Academy sectional race.
Thanks to five runners finishing in the top eight, the Roadrunners won the Class 2A Riverside Brookfield regional. Freshman Clare Ramsey (third), Gianna Levato (fourth), Emily Beedle (fifth), Colleen Cavanaugh (seventh) and Megan O’Kane (eighth) scored for Naz, which had all seven runners place 12th or better.
Olivia Ryan led the Friars with a third place finish in 17:22 at the Class 3A Fenwick regional at Schiller Woods on Saturday. Briana Daley was fifth and the Friars were third overall to advance to Saturday’s Lake Park sectional race.
The Panthers finished seventh at the Lyons Township regional on Saturday, missing a place at the sectional meet by one spot. Two West runners qualified individually: Adina Dodd and Linda Zaragoza.
The Lions defeated York 117-69 on Thursday to finish 5-0 in West Suburban Silver duals. LT will host the West Suburban Silver meet over the weekend with diving on Friday and swimming on Saturday.
