IHSA football playoff pairings announced

With the regular season in the books, the Illinois High School Association announced its football playoff pairings Saturday night. All matchups have been set, but game times and dates will be announced at a later date.

Bolingbrook (Class 8A) and Montini (5A) earned No. 1 seeds after posting perfect 9-0 records in the regular season.

The Broncos, the four-time defending Class 5A champs, will host No. 16 Morgan Park (5-4) in first-round action and could face Suburban Christian Gold rival and familiar playoff foe Marian Catholic (No. 9 seed, 7-2) in the second round. The Broncos topped the Hurricanes 40-35 on Oct. 11.

The Raiders will host No. 16 Bloom (5-4) in the playoff opener. No. 8 Marist or No. 9 Plainfield South could be lurking in the second round. The other No. 1 seed in Class 8A, Loyola, is the team Bolingbrook defeated to win the 2011 state title. 

In Class 3A, No. 7 seed IC Catholic Prep will rematch with No. 10 Aurora Christian in the first round. The Knights (6-3) topped the Eagles (6-3), the two-time defending Class 3A champs, 48-6 Oct. 12 to begin a three-game winning streak to end the regular season.

Glenbard South posted a 9-0 record and won the Metro Suburban Conference but drew a No. 3 seed in Class 5A and will host No. 14 Wheaton St. Francis (5-4) in a first-round game.

Nazareth (No. 10, 7-2) will travel to No. 7 Chicago Brooks (8-1) for its playoff opener.

Defending Class 7A champ Glenbard West (8-1) won the West Suburban Silver title, earned a No. 3 seed in Class 7A and will host No. 14 Machesney Park Harlem (6-3) in the opener.

No. 5 Wheaton North (7-2) will welcome No. 12 Glenbrook North (6-3) in the first round.

No. 4 Fenwick (8-1) opens at home against No. 13 Hersey (6-3) and could potentially face Wheaton North in the second round,

No. 5 Wheaton Warrenville South, No. 6 Willowbrook, No. 7 Benet and No. 8 Downers Grove North were all placed in the same Class 7A quadrant and will start the postseason on the road.

WWS (7-2) travels to face No. 4 Chicago Dunbar (8-1). 

Willowbrook (7-2) will play at No. 3 St. Rita (8-1).

Benet (6-3), which lost its final three games of the season, will face defending Class 8A champ Mt. Carmel (8-1) in the first round. The Caravan dropped down a class this fall.

Downers Grove North (5-4) is set to face No. 1 Whitney Young (9-0).

In Class 8A, DuPage Valley Conference champs Glenbard North (8-1) earned a No. 3 seed and will host No. 14 New Trier (5-4) in the playoff opener.

Also in Class 8A, No. 10 Downers Grove South, No. 11 Lyons Township and No. 13 Hinsdale Central will start the playoffs on the road.

The Mustangs (6-3), the West Suburban Gold champs, travel to face No. 7 Naperville Central (6-3).

LT, which bounced back from a 1-3 start to make the playoff field, drew No. 6 Simeon (6-3) in the first round.

The Red Devils will take on No. 4 Oswego (7-2) in the first round.
