Downers Grove South locks up conference, playoffs with win over Hinsdale South

DOWNERS GROVE – With Alec Arvanitakis and a stifling defense leading the way, Downers Grove South's football team won on four fronts Friday night.

The Mustangs not only won the game 34-7 over Hinsdale South, but they also won the West Suburban Gold conference title, earned a playoff berth, and retained possession of the Rebel Canon trophy, which goes to the winner of the rivalry game.

Downers Grove South improved to 6-3 overall and finished 6-0 in the WSG. The Mustangs will find out their playoff draw when the Illinois High School Association announces the pairings Saturday night.

Arvanitakis opened the scoring early in the second quarter when he took a screen pass and juked his way into the end zone for a 9-yard score and a 7-0 lead. On South's next possession, Javon Turner took a short pass, eluded a slew of would-be tacklers and raced 81 yards for the score. Arvanitakis added a 2-yard surge into the end zone just before halftime for a 21-0 lead.

The Mustangs' defense was stout in the first half, limiting the Hornets (4-5, 4-2) to two first downs and 56 yards of offense in the first two quarters.

Arvanitakis scored on a 6-yard sweep midway through the third quarter and Le'Devin Smith raced 31 yards on fourth-and-1 with 5:22 left in the fourth to give the Mustangs a 34-0 lead.

Hinsdale South quarterback Jake Czajkowski had a 10-yard touchdown run inside of a minute to play to erase the shutout.

Arvanitakis finished with 94 yards rushing and nine yards receiving. Turner caught five passes for 115 yards and quarterback Jordan Skach threw for 154 yards.

Czajkowski's 37 rushing yards topped the Hornets. Greg Wright Jr. had 34 yards on the ground and Robert Hall had 24. Arian Toney, sidelined for much of the season with a foot fracture, closed out his high school career with eight yards.
