Prep roundup: Hilltoppers finish top-15 at state tennis

With a full lineup competing at the IHSA state tennis tournament, Glenbard West finished in a tie for 13th place with 14 points.

In singles action, Ali Bush posted a 3-2 record, which included a pair of three-set wins in the consolation bracket. She also won her opening match 7-5, 6-0 over Sarah Wurster of Plainfield Central.

Fellow singles player Caroline Maltby opened the event with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Margaret McPherrin of St. Ignatius before knocking off Samantha Schrepferma of Kaneland 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. She then lost her next two matches.

The doubles team of Drew Menzel and Grace Norgaard also went 3-2, winning their first two matches in straight sets before losing 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in the third round to Blaire Porter and Angela Avgerinos of York.

The twosome then split two matches in the consolation bracket.

Rounding out the Hilltoppers’ group was the doubles pairing of Maggie Hughes and Elizabeth Ficarella, who posted a record of 1-2.

They notched a 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 win in the consolation round.

GIRLS TENNIS

Glenbard South

Representing the Raiders at the IHSA state meet, the doubles team of Jenna Brambora and Rachel Rettger posted a 2-2 record.

The duo lost in straight sets in the first round before bouncing back to defeat Hana Khatib and Jennifer Lee of Lockport 6-4, 7-5 and Olivia Luby and Kate Kremin of Evanston 6-0, 6-1 in the consolation bracket.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The Raiders grabbed a share of the Metro Suburban Conference title with a 25-11, 25-22 win over Timothy Christian in their regular season finale Oct. 24.

Tarah Valdez had seven kills and eight digs, Kenzie Watterson tallied seven kills and three aces and Sydney Bauman produced five kills and three blocks. Alex LaPonte dished out 22 assists.

The Hilltoppers defeated Downers Grove South 25-12, 26-24 Oct. 24 behind eight kills and six digs from Natalie Schilling.

Meg DeMaar also totaled 11 digs and Alison Burelbach produced nine kills and four digs.

Earlier last week, Glenbard West capped off a perfect run through the West Suburban Silver conference with a 25-16, 25-15 victory over Hinsdale Central.

Schilling had eight kills, Abby Winkler contributed 13 assists and DeMaar finished with 15 digs.

The 2013 season for the Hilltoppers came to an end with a 2-0 loss to Wheaton North in a Class 3A regional semifinal match on Oct. 22.

The Falcons scored two goals in a three-minute span during the second half to pull out the win.

Glenbard West had not allowed multiple goals in a contest since Sept. 6.

Glenbard West closed out the campaign with a record of 9-5-3.

Glenbard South

The Raiders fell by a 6-1 margin to Metro Suburban Conference rival Fenton in a Class 2A regional semifinal match on Oct. 23.

FIELD HOCKEY

In the first round of the state playoffs, the Hilltoppers beat Lakes 4-1 on Oct. 25.

Samantha Carlin scored three goals and Hannah Paterakis added the fourth.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Glenbard West/South

The Glenbard West/South Coop came in fourth place with 317 points at Saturday’s Mustang Invite.
