DOWNERS GROVE – Oct. 19 was a good day for the soccer and volleyball teams at Marquette Manor Baptist Academy.
Hosting the Association of Christian Schools’ junior high soccer and volleyball state championship tournaments, Marquette's girls volleyball team captured the title while the boys soccer team finished second.
The Lady Minutemen volleyball team won their semifinal match over Schaumburg Christian School in two sets, 15-13, 15-13, to make it to the championship match.
Trailing 13-8 in the first set of the semfinal, the Lady Minutemen scored the final seven points behind the serving of Jacinda Eskander (Willowbrook) and the consistent hitting of Hannah Schuster (Willowbrook) and Lauren Diddia (Woodridge).
Trailing again in the second set, 12-6, the Lady Minutemen rallied to take the lead 13-12 on the serve of Diddia. Tied 13-13, Marquette won the final two frantic rallies to advance to the championship match against South Side Baptist School of Oak Lawn, who had defeated Marquette twice during the regular season.
In the championship match, the Lady Minutemen were led by the consistent attack of captains Stephanie Woods (Westchester) and Joanna Schlagel (Downers Grove), and won the title match 25-21, 25-16. Marquette finished their championship season with a record of 13-3.
The Minutemen soccer team won their morning semifinal match over Logos Christian Academy of Niles 5-1 behind an early goal by Bryce Ramler (Downers Grove). Team captain Andrew Muravitsky (Hinsdale) scored a hat trick, and Charles Ofori-Kuragu (Bolingbrook) added another goal as the Minutemen cruised to victory and a spot in the championship match against Schaumburg Christian School.
With 10 minutes to play in the final, Schaumburg pushed ahead 1-0. The Minutemen had several scoring chances late, including a final-minute attempt by Ramler that was saved by the Schaumburg keeper. The Minutemen finished their season with a record of 9-1.
