Countryside could purchase Dominick's property

COUNTRYSIDE – The city of Countryside is looking into buying the property recently vacated by Dominick’s after its parent company, Safeway Inc., announced it would close all locations in the Chicago area.

The city sent a letter to Safeway to find out if and how long the property is under contract. If the company is looking to sell it, the city could try to purchase the building and potentially bring in another grocery store.

“Some still want to see some type of grocery store there, maybe a higher-end one,” City Administrator Gail Paul said. “If the property isn’t under contact and they do have a price they are looking for, it would be taken back to the Economic Development Committee.”

Paul said four of the closing Dominick’s sites have already been bought by Jewel, but she didn’t know if Jewel purchased the Countryside location at 6704 Joliet Road.

Paul said she hopes to hear about the status of the property within a week.
