Sixteen students at Westview Hills Middle School have been selected to be in the IMEA District 1 Festival this November.

WESTMONT – Sixteen students have been selected to represent Westview Hills Middle School at the Illinois Music Education Association District 1 Festival on Nov. 9.

Of those 16, three students were chosen to sit first chair, meaning they’ve outperformed every other musician they competed against, according to Karen Moffett, band director at the school.

“It’s really hard to do and so competitive,” Moffett said of the competition. “Those kids are battling the odds and they really worked so hard.”

The students auditioned for the group in early October with about 1,200 middle school musicians from around the area, according to Moffett, who said more than 300 were given spots.

Moffett said being selected is really exciting for the students.

“It’s always exciting to have your students excel when they’re on their own,” said Moffett, adding that the students also worked with Jan Benson, choir director and music teacher at Westview Hills.

The IMEA festival will be Nov. 9 at Riverside Brookfield High School, 160 Ridgewood Road.
