Downers Grove South’s football team has won five of its last six games to move into the top spot in the West Suburban Gold standings and the verge of a playoff berth. Javon Turner has been particularly dangerous the past two weeks as the wide receiver has caught 10 passes for 242 yards and five touchdowns in back-to-back WSG wins over Willowbrook and Proviso East. Turner, the Sears Appliance and Hardware Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about his abilities as a receiver and the team’s turnaround from an 0-2 start.
What do you like about making a long touchdown catch?
I think just catching the ball and seeing the open field in front of me. That’s probably the most exciting.
Can you sometimes tell that you have a good chance at scoring a touchdown when you line up for a play?
I think if the ball comes my way, I try to score on every play. I have that mentality.
What do you think is your best attribute as a receiver?
Probably my speed and my ability to get open. I can get open pretty good.
What kind of coverage do you like to see from a defense?
Man coverage. It’s just one man versus the other and the best man is going to win.
What’s been the key to the team’s turnaround?
Just taking it week by week, trying to get better each week. And taking care of the little things. That’s really the most important thing.
