Oberweis '90 percent' sure he will run for U.S. Senate

LISLE – State Sen. Jim Oberweis (R-25) is "90 percent" sure he'll run for U.S. Senate next year, his spokesperson Ben Marcum said.

Marcum said Oberweis is circulating petitions to run in the Republican primary but has not yet made an official announcement.

"He's gotten the blessing of his wife, so that's the first step," Marcum said. "I think it would have to take something pretty extraordinary for him not to do it."

Downers Grove native and political newcomer Doug Truax announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination this summer, as has another newcomer William Lee, of Rockton.

Kane County regional school board member Chad Koppie has also tossed his hat in the ring. He has run for U.S. Senate and governor multiple times as a Republican, Independent and Constitution Party candidate.

The Republican nominee will face Democrat Dick Durbin, who has had the seat since 1996, in the November 2014 general election.

Oberweis, who lives in Sugar Grove and owns Lisle-based Oberweis Asset Management, bid unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the 2002 and 2004 U.S. Senate elections.

His State Senate seat expires in 2016.

The 25th Senate District includes portions of Naperville, West Chicago and Warrenville.
