Downers Grove's Recycling Extravaganza collects 92,000 pounds of waste

DOWNERS GROVE – The annual Recycling Extravaganza saved more than 92,000 pounds of items from ending up in a landfill, according to the Village of Downers Grove and the Downers Grove Park District.

More than one thousand residents were able to dispose of their items at a single location during the five-hour event on Sept. 28.

In a press release, the village and park district thanked volunteers, residents and sponsors who helped out at this year’s event.

Items collected for recycling or safe disposal included, among others:

• 12,000 to 14,000 pounds of carpet, melted down for plastic

• 7,980 pounds of paper, shredded that evening, returned to pulp, and recycled

• 895 ink jet cartridges

• 189 cell phones

• 140 glasses

• 59,038 pounds of electronics

• 52 propage tanks
