DOWNERS GROVE – Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn stopped by Downers Grove North High School Tuesday to recognize students for their effort last month when they rallied behind classmate Anne Wagner.

Wagner, who has down syndrome, has spent the last 20 months battling leukemia. Her peers elected her homecoming queen Sept. 27 after Wagner's friend Mary Doro mounted a social media campaign to tell her story.

During his visit to the school, Quinn named Oct. 15, 2013 to be Downers Grove North High School Day in Illinois.

Quinn spoke to students during an assembly, District 99 spokesperson Jill Browning said. Doro spoke, as did Anne Wagner's mother, Amy Wagner, with Anne at her side.

"The governor recognized the school for being inclusive and supportive," Browning said. "The governor was just very positive about social media and being supportive of one another and getting behind a good idea."
