RB student charged with felonies for attacking student and security

RIVERSIDE – Riverside police announced felony charges against a Riverside Brookfield High School student from Riverside Oct. 2.

Police reported that on Oct. 1, a juvenile student was detained by school staff after threatening another student. Police learned the 16-year-old offender was angry with another student and came to school to retaliate. The offender went to the school and began banging on a locked classroom door that the victim was inside. When the teacher went to answer the door, the offender pushed the teacher and entered the classroom.

At the same time, the victim’s girlfriend, who was also in the class, tried to defend her boyfriend and was hit by the offender. The teacher set off an internal alarm and security staff responded. When they arrived, an officer was elbowed in the face by the offender before he was restrained.

Police said the 16-year-old offender was interviewed with a parent at the police station, but at the time the information was released, a cause for the incident was undetermined.

Police said that due to the seriousness of the crime, and because it occurred on school grounds, the student was charged with two counts of aggravated battery – one count for striking a female student and another for striking the security officer. The offender was also charged with simple battery, assault and reckless conduct.
