York’s girls volleyball team won two matches this week to build a five-match winning streak.
On Tuesday, the Dukes won at Hinsdale Central 26-24, 25-12. A day later, Downers Grove South came to Elmhurst and the Dukes pulled out a three-game victory, 18-25, 25-14, 25-21. With the wins, York improved to 18-9 overall and 3-2 in the West Suburban Silver.
The Knights improved to 5-3 in the Suburban Christian Blue with a 25-14, 21-25, 25-20 win at Rosary on Wednesday. Delaney D’Amore had 11 kills and 23 digs, and Rory Manion had 17 kills and 16 digs.
Frannie Cervone had 17 assists to feed those big hitters. Kerry Mulligan also contributed to the defensive effort with 16 digs.
The Trojans rebounded from their first conference loss of the season to Riverside Brookfield on Oct. 10 by beating Fenton 25-14, 25-15 on Tuesday. Timothy carried a 9-1 Metro Suburban Conference record into Thursday’s conference match with Elmwood Park.
The Broncos went 4-1 at the Huntley Tournament over the weekend. Montini swept Richmond-Burton and Harlem on Friday. On Saturday, they lost to St. Ignatius 25-27, 20-25 before beating Johnsburg and Jacobs.
Montini improved to 26-3 with a 25-12, 25-17 win over St. Edward on Wednesday. Natalie Lopez had seven kills and Bridget Lucas added 13 digs in the win.
Freshman Maddie Hurt was the only golfer from any of the three Elmhurst schools, either boys or girls, to qualify for this weekend’s state tournament by shooting an 84 at the Class A Aquin sectional Monday at the West Course at Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport. The state tournament is at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur on Friday and Saturday.
The Broncos advanced to state by placing third at the Nazareth sectional on Monday. They finished with a team score of 343 to finish behind Glenbard South (317) and St. Francis (339).
The Class 2A state tournament takes place Friday and Saturday at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University.
Blaire Porter and Angela Avgerinos took second at No. 1 doubles at the West Suburban Silver tournament over the weekend. In the championship match, the duo lost to a Hinsdale Central team it beat in the regular season match. The Dukes, host of the tournament, finished fifth in both the tournament and in the overall league standings.
The Knights placed sixth in the Suburban Christian Conference meet, which finished on Monday, with seven points. St. Francis won the tournament.
The Broncos scored two points to take eighth place at the Suburban Christian Conference meet on Monday.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Hannah Nolte, Paige Jaeger, Perri Brinkmeier and Jessica Woolfe took third at the Barrington Invitational on Saturday. It was the highest finish for any York team at the meet. The Dukes took fourth behind Loyola, the hosts and Lyons Township.
