Matos, Glenbard South boys golf state-bound after sectional title

LOCKPORT – With a soft-spoken personality, Russell Matos lets his play on the golf course do his talking.
And on Monday, what was said was the Glenbard South sophomore is a sectional champion.
Competing with his Raiders' teammates at the Class 2A Nazareth sectional at Broken Arrow Golf Course, Matos claimed medalist honors with a 2-over par 74, which bested the rest of the field by four strokes.
"I was really happy with how I played," Matos said. "My drives were going really straight and I was able to hit my approach shots where I wanted to."
His individual accomplishments helped Glenbard South to a major team achievement as the Raiders captured first place with a stroke total of 317, which was 22 shots ahead of runner-up St. Francis.
"The course was playing really tough," Matos said, "but everybody was able to get through it very well. We always wanted to [win a sectional] and it felt a lot better once we accomplished it."
Michael Wittenberg followed Matos with an 80, Christopher Dufort shot an 81 and Kevin Uvodich rounded out South's scoring quartet with an 82. Dakota Marino (97) and John Marks (101) also competed for the Raiders, who for the first time in program history have won conference, regional and sectional titles in the same season.
Next up is the Class 2A state meet which begins on Friday at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal. A year ago, Glenbard South came in sixth in an event that was shortened to one round due to the weather.
"I hope we can do well," Matos said of the state meet. "Everybody will play their own games and we will hope for the best."
Will Hanson punched his ticket to the IHSA Class 3A state meet in his final high school golf season after competing in Monday's Naperville Central sectional at Springbrook Golf Course in Naperville.
The senior shot a 3-over par 75 to move on to this weekend's state tournament at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.
The Spartans advanced to the Class 2A state meet after finishing second at Monday's Nazareth sectional.
St. Francis posted a score of 339.
John Stolte topped the squad with an 80 while Dan Zurawski and Jonathan Nocek each had an 84. Connor Buckley tallied a 91, Jeff DiTusa had a 92 and Dan Mochel carded a 94.
The state meet will take place Friday and Saturday at Weibring Golf Club in Normal.
The Hilltoppers competed at the Class AA Rockford Guilford sectional Monday, finishing eighth with a stroke total of 379. The squad did not have any state qualifiers.
Glenbard West had advanced to the sectional after capturing the team championship at the Oct. 9 Glenbard East regional.
The squad finished with a score of 360 at the regional and was led by the 85 of Claire Graham. Emma Klimala followed with an 86, Madison Chandler shot a 94 and Morgan Adair had a 95.
Lilly Mittenthal represented the Raiders at Monday's Rockford Guilford Class AA sectional but did not advance to the state meet.
At the Glenbard East regional on Oct. 9, Glenbard South came in fifth place with a total of 394 and Mittenthal shot a 91 to advance to the sectional.
Elana Kozak just missed out on moving on from the regional after falling in a playoff for the final spot. She shot a 95.
