Glenbard D-87 to launch leadership academy for Hispanic families

Glenbard Township High School District 87 and the Glenbard Parent Series will offer a new Hispanic parent and student leadership academy titled "Grooming for Excellence" beginning Oct. 23.

The four-workshop academy is designed and facilitated by Lourdes Ferrer, a motivational speaker, researcher and author who has led previous Glenbard Parent Series sessions in Spanish. She will address closing the achievement gap for students from diverse backgrounds.

The academy will provide high school students and their parents with the knowledge and skills needed for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Students who complete the academy qualify for a five-hour ACT prep course in math facilitated by Ferrer, which will take place a few weeks before the Prairie State Achievement Exam.

The academy will begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Glenbard East High School, 1014 S. Main St. in Lombard. The free program is open to all.
