COD's Commercial Driver's License program announces graduate successes

Published: Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013 2:15 p.m. CDT

College of DuPage’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program recently graduated its 100th student, reflecting the growing success of the program.

Graduates are regularly recruited by companies such as Schneider National, Crete Carrier, Iron Mountain and Tri-Air Transportation, according to a College of DuPage (COD) news release.

The program launched in January 2012 as a partnership with Bell CDL.

Convinced a truck driving school would succeed in DuPage County – where no such school existed – Chris Bell and his parents met with Dean of Continuing Education and Extended Learning Joe Cassidy about launching a CDL program at the college.

“It was clear this market wasn’t being served,” said Cassidy, in the release. “They wanted to develop a high-quality program that trained drivers for immediate entry into the workforce, which is exactly the type of programs we offer.”

Schneider National recently shared its Commercial Driver Services Scorecard with COD, revealing that all 25 CDL graduates from COD hired by Schneider received perfect scores, according to the release.

The program offers a 240-hour course that covers over-the-road, maneuvers, skills yard and classroom training. Classes begin every six weeks and are offered at COD’s Addison Regional Center, which includes classroom space and an outdoor training area.

In addition to teaching students how to drive a truck, the program prepares students with the skills they need to get a job, including how to interview well. They also learn all aspects of the driving process, from keeping logs to map reading to trip planning.

The Addison Regional Center is located at 301 S. Swift Road. For more information, visit cod.edu/academics/conted/business/cdl.aspx, call 630-942-2275 or email cdl@cod.edu.
