LA GRANGE – Volunteers are needed to assist with a heart screening offered to Lyons Township High School students.
The school provides students a free electrocardiogram heart screening as part of the Young Hearts for Life program that identifies teenagers at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, which causes the deaths of about 30 young people every week.
Nearly 250 volunteers are needed to facilitate the screenings Nov. 7 and 8. Volunteers must attend a 90-minute training session Nov. 6 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. or 7 to 8:30 p.m. at South Campus.
Volunteer shifts are available Nov. 7 and 8 for thee time slots: all day (7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.), morning (7 to 11:30 a.m.) and afternoon (11 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.).
No medical training or experience is necessary for volunteers, who must be 18 or older. Volunteers attach electrodes to the students’ chest and limbs. An ECG monitors the electrical activity of the heart and prints information about its rate and rhythm. A printout is read by a cardiologist, who interprets the results.
