VILLA PARK – A Chicago-style poetry slam will be held at the Villa Park Public Library at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

Marc Smith, a poet and poetry slam founder, will perform at the event and emcee the competition between poets. Judges will be selected from the crowd and prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Poets must only read their own, original poems during the slam and should be prepared to read more than one poem during the competition.

Smith founded the poetry slam in 1986 in Chicago and hosts weekly slams at the Green Mill jazz club. He has performed at the Smithsonian Institute, the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts and many other venues.
