The soccer postseason begins Friday for both Class 2A and 3A with regional quarterfinals. Glenbard South and Glenbard West begin play next week in regional semifinals with the hopes of starting a long postseason run all the way to Lincoln-Way North, home to the state finals for both classes, Nov. 8 and 9.

Glenbard South

Regional: Glenbard South

Sectional: Burlington Central

First game: 6:30 p.m. Wed., Oct. 23, vs. No. 2 Fenton

Outlook: Glenbard South has put together another solid campaign this fall.

Jonny Gutierrez has eight goals and two assists to lead the Raiders, who posted a 7-8-1 record through their first 16 games.

“We are a good team this year,” coach Melissa Pero said. “In the games we lost, we just couldn’t find the net. We had plenty of opportunities, we just weren’t executing them early on.”

The Raiders received the No. 3 seed at their own Class 2A regional and open the postseason against Metro Suburban Conference foe Fenton.

The Bison finished as the runner-up in the league with a 5-1 mark and beat Glenbard South 3-0 back on Sept. 19.

The winner would most likely see No. 1 seed Wheaton Academy in the regional final on Oct. 25.

“We have very talented teams in our regional, including Wheaton Academy and Fenton,” Pero said. “We look forward to competing with them again.”

Glenbard West

Regional: Glenbard East

Sectional: Schaumburg

First game: 6:30 p.m. Tues., Oct. 22, vs. No. 12 Wheaton North

Outlook: Backed by a strong defense, Glenbard West is enjoying a very productive 2013 season.

The Hilltoppers are 9-4-2 on the fall, which includes a 4-2 mark in the West Suburban Silver.

Three of their losses have come by 1-0 scores to highly regarded
Hinsdale Central, Lyons Township and Lake Park. Most impressively, the squad has seven shutouts on the fall and has allowed just 11 goals this year.

“We have lost to some of the top teams in the state by the smallest of margins,” Glenbard West coach Maciej Kusmierz said. “We are hoping to play with the same discipline during the postseason.”

Glenbard West received the No. 5 seed at the Class 3A Schaumburg sectional and drew No. 12 Wheaton North in the postseason opener.

A victory would send the Hilltoppers into the Oct. 26 regional title game where No. 4 seed Glenbard North would most likely await. Glenbard West tied the Panthers 0-0 on Oct. 5.

St. Francis

Regional: Glenbard South

Sectional: Burlington Central

First game: 6 p.m. Friday vs. No. 5 IMSA

Outlook: A young and inexperienced St. Francis squad moved its record to 5-9-2 overall after a 4-0 loss to Bartlett on Oct. 10.

Receiving the No. 4 seed at the Class 2A Glenbard South regional, the Spartans will take on IMSA in a regional quarterfinal. A victory would pit St. Francis against No. 1 seed Wheaton Academy in the semifinals on Tuesday.

The regional championship game is Oct. 25.
