Letter: Restaurant far from family friendly, says diner

To the Editor:

If you take your daughter to Ellyn's, be prepared to explain a few things.

Ellyn's Tap and Grill, in Glen Ellyn, is largely billed as a family friendly eatery (see numerous reviews on Yelp) with a great menu and a large variety of beers on tap. The restaurant has been a favorite in my family since it opened. Many of our friends gather there to watch games on TV or meet there after their kids sporting events.

Until last night, that is.

I can't say how long it's been going on and the restaurant manager said that “it's been awhile.” But while enjoying dinner at Ellyn's this past week, we looked up and saw what can minimally be described as inappropriate (some might consider “pornographic”) photographs on the Golden Tee video screen.

The photos portray either one girl in lingerie in a very explicit, suggestive pose or two girls together also in suggestive poses. The photos are interspersed amongst other ads and stay up for about 15 seconds.

This may not seem long, but it is plenty long enough for children to notice and ask about them. They were up long enough for me to take a picture with my cell phone. I have that picture, but it is not appropriate to put in this newspaper. It was also up long enough for me to take a picture of the little 6-year-old girl right next to the machine.

I'm sure many of you will read this and trip over one another to get to Ellyn's to see these “ads.” But in the end, if you have children of any age, I can't help but think that you'll agree that these pictures have no place in an establishment in our town.
