Zoo receives STEM grant

BROOKFIELD – The Brookfield Zoo recently was awarded a $1.66 million National Science Foundation grant, the Chicago Zoological Society announced.

The grant is for the zoo’s SCIENCE Program. SCIENCE stands for Supporting a Community’s Informal Educational Needs: Confidence and Empowerment in STEM.

Through the grant, a project will create, implement and research a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) ecosystem in support of lifelong environmental science learning in Fuller Park, which is an under-resourced Chicago community, according to a news release.

The zoo will work in partnership with Eden Place Nature Center in the Fuller Park community. Eden place offers a full range of environmental science learning opportunities for students, teachers, families and adults.

In addition, a research component led by the University of Illinois at Chicago will be helping to understand how institutions, like the Chicago Zoological Society, help in enhancing science knowledge and interest in the public.
