Letter: Food pantry requests donations, at risk of closing

To the Editor:

The Milton Township Food Pantry is in dire straights.

Once again, we are on the brink of closing our doors to the needy of Milton Township. With less than $1,200 in the bank and monthly food costs of more than $1,300, without help, we will run out of food by Halloween.

This shortage could not have come at a worse time. We have lately been providing food and sundries to between 400 and 500 individuals each month and that number will rise into the holiday season. The poor shape of the economy has had a very damaging effect on donations.

We have served all of Milton Township, including Wheaton, Glen Ellyn and south Carol Stream, since 1982, relying solely on the generosity of our citizens to stock the food pantry. We purchase food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank at greatly reduced rates, but serving the individuals we do has resulted in a net loss so far this year of more than $4,000.

The food pantry is administered by the Township’s general assistance caseworkers, operated from the donated space in our Township offices and staffed by some truly wonderful volunteers, so 100 percent of all donations go to food, not overhead. As a 501(c)3 Illinois nonprofit corporation, all contributions, whether in cash or in kind, are fully tax deductible. No tax dollars are used for the pantry.

We know that the present economic conditions have directly affected many people in our Township, but if you are able to help us, the time is now.

If you need food, please come and see us while we are still in business. Thank you.

Food may be dropped off at and donations sent to Milton Township Food Pantry, 1492 N. Main St., Wheaton, 60187. For more information, call us at 630-668-1616.
