Backup QB leads North to 'Crosstown Classic' win
DOWNERS GROVE – An unsung hero lead Downers Grove North to a much needed victory on Friday.
When Trojan quarterback David Edwards could not play against Downers Grove South due to a bruised leg, tight end Sebastian Calvino made his first start of the season under center. The senior rushed for four touchdowns, leading North to a 42-21 victory over their cross town rival.
All purpose player Vontae Diggs also turned in a solid performance, totaling a rushing touchdown, kickoff return score and a fourth quarter interception which sealed the game for the Trojans.
Downers Grove South got on the board first when junior quarterback Jordan Skach connected on slant to receiver Javon Turner, who then raced 86 yards for Mustangs touchdown. But the 7-0 advantage was South's only lead of the game.
Running back Alec Arvanitakis added rushing and receiving score, yet it was not enough fire power to outgun the Trojans, who ran away with the game in the fourth quarter.
The win halted a three-game losing streak for Downers Grove North, while South lost for the first time since a week two matchup against Proviso West.
Next, Downers Grove South will face Willowbrook and North will play York. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
