RIVERSIDE – It didn't take Glenbard South long to assert its dominance over Riverside Brookfield's football team Friday night.
The Raiders scored early and often against the shorthanded Bulldogs and took a shutout into halftime of a 49-14 win on RB's homecoming. South (6-0, 2-0 Metro Suburban Conference) led 42-0 at halftime and the game had a running clock for the entire second half.
RB (0-6, 0-2 MSC) already had a number of starters down with injuries and several more seniors were suspended related to a homecoming incident at the school earlier in the week.
"Coming into it we knew it was going to be a tremendous challenge," said RB coach Brendan Curtin. "The bottom line is I just think we were outmanned on many different levels."
Sophomore quarterback Ryan Swift and sophomore wide receiver Dean Zigulich had some of the better offensive games for RB. Swift had his most efficient game, completing just over 76 percent of his passes. Lewis Rogers was the only senior to make the stat sheet offensively.
Junior Zach Paisker stepped in at running back with four players typically ahead of him on the depth chart out for the game. Paisker scored RB's second touchdown on a 3-yard run after Swift had scored earlier on a quarterback sneak.
"I've never started on the varsity level on offense or defense before so all these guys being out and me having to step up like that, I appreciate the coaches giving me the opportunity," Paisker said. "I really enjoyed it and I had a lot of fun.
"I was really nervous, though, because it was homecoming."
The 0-6 record is something the Bulldogs can't avoid. They have three weeks to pick up a win and avoid the embarrassment of a winless season.
Curtin thinks the team is still pushing hard to finish the season on a positive.
"Obviously it's an internal spirit almost, you're either a competitor or not," Curtin said. "It's important to make the days count and not count the days."
