WESTCHESTER – The village's outsourcing of dispatch services is set for mid-October, but residents won't have to do anything different than dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.
"It should be seamless for the residents," Village Manager Janet Matthys said.
In April, the Village Board approved the transfer of dispatch services to NORCOMM Public Safety Communications, Inc., which also services Melrose Park, Northlake, Bellwood and Franklin Park. The move will cost the village's seven dispatchers – two of whom have already resigned – their jobs, but the village said the move was necessary to avoid a $582,000 deficit had it kept dispatch services in-house.
The village said the move would save an estimated $1.2 million over five years.
Matthys said the village is still able to maintain its own operation with the five remaining dispatchers, but that it is ready to transfer services to NORCOMM at any point should any of them resign.
Village President Sam Pulia said in April that it had become too expensive for the village to run its own service.
“We tried to keep it in house here. We really did,” Pulia said. “This is looking like the wave of the future so to speak, as the costs of running your own operation become out of sight.”
