York student named semifinalist in national scholarship contest

ELMHURST – A York High School Student was named as a semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Samantha Harrell is one of more than 1,600 black American high school seniors recognized in the program, which is sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Semifinalists will compete for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth about $2.5 million. About 80 percent generally attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win an Achievement Scholarship in the spring.

Samantha Harrell was recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting by a proclamation read by her mother, board member Margaret Harrell.
