York junior tennis player Angela Avgerinos has partnered with Blaire Porter to form one of the top doubles teams in the state. Through last weekend’s action the duo had a 19-4 record. Avgerinos entered this week on an eight-match winning streak. Avgerinos, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about her recent run and her success with Porter.
What has made you and Blaire so successful together this season?
We have really good communication on the court and help keep each other positive.
After moving up from No. 2 doubles last year is it cool to have the title of No. 1 doubles team?
It feels really good and it’s really nice to play No. 1 with Blaire. It feels good to move up with Blaire. Me and Blaire play at the same club together (College Park Athletic Club in Bannockburn), so we have more practice time together.
What goals do you have for the rest of the season?
We want to have a good state ranking and do well at sectionals like we have been and just do better at state. We did pretty good last year. We were in the top-32.
What did it mean to win your match against Hinsdale Central?
It’s really cool because we haven’t had a win from them. We almost beat them in conference last year, but it’s cool because they’re always such a good team.
