GLENDALE HEIGHTS – A Glendale Heights man has been sentenced to 90 days in the DuPage County Jail after beating his former roommate and killing his pet cockatiel, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

David Hritz, 40, of 1270 Glen Ellyn Road, got into an altercation with his roommate, repeatedly striking her in the head and body with his fists, at 10:09 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2012, the release said. Hritz then threw his pet cockatiel against a wall and stabbed it to death with a knife.

He was found guilty of two counts of domestic battery and one count of aggravated cruelty to animals on July 9, 2013, after a one-day bench trial, according to the release.

Hritz will be required to serve 50 percent of his sentence before being released and must serve two years of probation upon release and submit the counseling as deemed necessary, the release said. He also must not possess or own any animals.
