WeGo co-op swimmers set sights on state
WEST CHICAGO - The 2013 West Chicago-Batavia co-op girls swim team is a little different version than last year’s squad, which finished in a tie for 27th place at the IHSA state meet.
All-stater Maya Skorupski has graduated, leaving a younger and more inexperienced group this time around.
“We have some growing pains to get through but once we get through those, I think that our team will be set up for the next couple of years,” said coach Nick Parry.
The Wild/Dogs do return a pair of state qualifiers in seniors Nicole Reitz and Paulina Konopko, who were a part of the 200-yard medley relay team which qualified out of the Metea Valley sectional.
“Our expectations from year-to-year, generally, don’t change much,” the coach said. “We would like to have a high finish in our conference meet and sectional meet, and try to qualify at least one relay plus some individual swims to the state swim meet.
“With a group so young, I am not quite sure what we will be able to get into the state meet. There is a lot of talent, but we need to preform at the right time in order to be successful.”
Another change is the Wild/Dogs are a part of the Upstate Eight conference this fall after leaving the DuPage Valley Conference. Neuqua Valley, Waubonsie Valley, St. Charles East and St. Charles North all provide stiff competition in the new conference. The coach said the team is up for the challenge in the new league.
“This is a group that wants to get better,” Parry added. “They work hard and push themselves to improve. We have a long way to go but we have made some pretty significant strides in the past couple of weeks in order to put ourselves in a position to achieve our goals later in the season.”
