BENSENVILLE – A Bensenville School District 2 band director recently received the Young Conductor Award.

Band director George Andrikokus, a Bensenville native, won the award, which is given to only one grade school music teacher in Illinois each year by the Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA).

The Barbara Buehlman Young Conductor Award goes to a director with five to 10 years of teaching experience whose students consistently excel. Andrikokus also qualified because of his active involvement in IGSMA events, his growth as an educator and the respect of his peers.

Andrikokus teaches fifth-grade band at Tioga and W.A. Johnson Schools as well as sixth-grade band at Blackhawk Middle School. He joined District 2 this school year after having taught in Addison for six years where his jazz band received perfect scores in state competitions.

A Tioga and Blackhawk alumnus, Andrikokus graduated from Fenton High School and received his bachelor’s degree in music education from Elmhurst College.
